The Incredible Investment Potential Found In Junk Silver Coins

by Glen Phillips

While rare and collectible silver coins are the ones that often end up in the news and in coin collector's magazines, it is the value of junk silver coins that continue to drive the silver trading industry forward. It is indeed ironic that "junk" silver coins constitute the very lifeblood of the bulk of silver transactions. And yet this is exactly the case. How else can the industry survive if all that it has are rare coins that are often sold sparingly? In the mind of the educated investor there is truly nothing that's junk about junk silver coins.

Junk silver coins are those that are defined by coins that are less than .999 fine; most typically associated with 90% silver coins. Silver rounds and bars as well can be said to differ from junk silver coins by having a substantially higher percentage of silver.

Why then should you consider even investing in junk silver coins? Well for one thing, they offer investors incredible liquidity and are often traded in large quantities. This is exactly what makes junk silver coins so popular among precious metals investors. Selling individual junk silver coins will not see you any realistic benefit. Rather they are mostly sold in bags of fixed quantities. Examples of this include bags which can are labeled as $100, $250, $500 and $1000. Mercury and Roosevelt dimes, Washington quarters, and Franklin half dollars are some of the popular junk silver coins in the market today. That is not to say that you would have to base your bags on exact amounts of a particular branded junk silver coin. This is so because bag values are based purely on combined weights made up of coins that have a similar silver content.

To illustrate, consider a $500 bag of Franklin half dollars. To make a bag that has a $500 total value from half dollar coins, you would need a total of 1,000 half dollar coins altogether. Because each Franklin half dollar coin has a 90% silver content rating which is equivalent to .36169 ounces of silver per coin - the total weight of silver for that bag would amount to 361.69 ounces of silver. Supposing that the spot price for silver for that selling day was $30 per ounce, the bag would then sell for $10,850.70.

The bulk transaction makes it easier to experience the effects of fluctuation in the silver spot price. If you are selling one coin, a $1/ounce change in the spot price would be almost negligible. In bulk however this can amount to a substantial value. Assuming you bought that $500 bag of Franklin half dollars for $10,850.70 and the spot price rose up to $31/ounce the following day; you would then have a junk silver coin bag valued at $11,212.39, resulting in a profit of $361.69.

There is one point you need to consider when looking to buy or sell junk silver coins. The vast majority of coin dealers in this industry would not be willing to buy junk silver coins at the precise level of the silver spot price. This is because if they did it would limit their opportunities to make sustainable profits. So from this we can see that your only real task would be to find such silver coin buyers that can give you prices as close as possible to the spot price of silver. If you find such a dealer, hold on to them for you have a gem of a partner that will allow you to trade silver junk coins quite profitably indeed.

Do not let this deter you however from the great opportunity that lies in junk silver coins. They are excellent profit builders even though the coins themselves can be said to be inferior to higher quality silver based coins. As mentioned before the entire silver market owes its prestige to the successful distribution of 90% silver coins. This means that investing in junk silver coins will always represent a useful add on to a dynamic investment portfolio.
