Knives Are Tools When You Have To Survive
by Sadye W. Gates
It was a day that I will always remember, as it is the day that changed my life and my outlook on many things, including the necessity of gathering a decent collection of knives. My work as a claims adjuster sometimes means that I have to go visit people in rural locales such as a trip to a very isolated region of Montana. As I was driving, I slid on a snowy section of road and wound up trapped in a ditch.
It didn't take me long to understand that there was no easy way out of there and nowhere within reasonable walking distance. The severity of the situation was not lost on me and I did all that I could to get my car back on the road, but it was beyond my capabilities. I began a thorough investigation of the car after I had failed in my attempt to contact help with a phone call. On that particular trip, my car was being fixed, so I had asked to borrow one from a friend who worked with me.
This guy was a knife aficionado, or at least he really liked them as he kept a sizeable collection of knives in a leather case beneath the passenger seat. They came in many varied designs, most of which were obviously designed to perform individual actions that I could not identify. I sat down and considered my circumstances for a half hour or so and finally ended up taking one with a serrated edge out of the case.
In my previous search, I had pocketed a box of matches and decided to use the saw-like edge to saw some branches off of a couple trees. With the right tools, it was a fast job and as the sun set, my crackling blaze was warming my hands. I hoped that the smoke or light from the fire could signal to someone that I was there and in trouble.
I was there overnight, huddled near the fire for warmth in the dark woods before a man in a pickup came by and helped me pull the car out of the ditch. I was free and able to return to my home and to my employment. I imagined that if I had been left out there any longer, I would have had to resort to employing one of the other knives to hunting for my next meal. I hadn't needed to do that, but I did spend some time the next day buying my own set for my own car.
