Employed As A Commercial Janitor
by Alison Wilcox
A janitor is a person who assumes the role of a caretaker in any building. His main duty is to ensure that the building is devoid of any dirt. He or she performs these duties wholeheartedly. Commercial means anything that is involved in the business of making money for profit. It is safe to say that a commercial janitor is one who takes care of the day to day maintenance of business premises.
This person is in charge of ensuring that the entire building is free from dirt and is organized. Due to this, he or she is contributes immensely to the smooth running of any institution. A lot of institutions depend on these professionals for proper sanitation. Due to this, a lot of businesses have come up to provide this needed duty.
Many commercial and residential buildings are coming up in big cities, and while a lot is taken into consideration when building, janitorial services are top of the list of utility services to be provided. Building owners go for the best service providers in town. While some of the people in this profession work tirelessly to make a name for themselves, others are lazy hence giving the profession a bad name.
For a building custodian, different paraphernalia are used to ensure effective work is done; these include different technical and basic machines. In some cases, due to the nature of work being done these professionals get insurance cover to protect them in case of accidents. Unlike in most jobs, this one may require one to roll up the sleeves and dig in the dirt.
There are very many advantages in engaging in this profession. The first, and very interesting of them all, is the high salary. Professionals in this field also enjoy flexible hours and other benefits. Another advantage is that people who take up this line of work only clean when necessary, whether every day or two or three times per week. Another advantage is that one is able to meet different people hence make new contacts.
For every silver lining, there has to be a dark cloud. This job also has its shortcomings. Sometimes garbage and dirt are left around the premises making the work of the custodian to be very hard. Others litter around just because there is someone to take care of the mess. Young people are another lot that give janitors a run for their money. Their destructive nature normally leaves the building requiring serious maintenance.
Anyone can be a janitor, be it male or female. Women mostly take the role of general cleaners because women tend to take cleanliness more seriously than their male counterparts. Seeing that it has a high salary, many people should look at it as a source of employment. Some of these professionals form unions to protect them from abuse from potential employers and also help them gain competitive contracts from prospective employers.
A commercial janitor should be accorded understanding and treated in a way he or she does not feel belittled. Sometimes employers offer these people incentives to keep them working and encourage each and every person to be better at what one does. The work done by people in this line of duty is very much needed therefore the employers should show concern for the welfare of such people otherwise the organizations fail to run smoothly.
