Why You Need a Responsive Website

by Clea Spahn

Web browsing has taken on a new form in recent years, and more people everyday are using a cell phone, smartphone, tablet, or netbook to get online. Until responsive design was introduced, sites that were designed for PC displays using different browsers such as Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer, were unreadable on mobile devices.

Now, because responsive web design techniques are so prominent, browsing the web on a mobile unit causes no headaches as it is straightforward. These designs have adjustable layouts and scalable images that can adapt to any type of mobile device settings. The range of your company's influence can be increased by having a responsive website which will give preferred customers better access to your content.

Responsive web design aims to provide an optimal user experience across a wide range of web-accessing devices. The name came from "responsive architecture", an idea that, when people were in a structure, they could design it so it changed in order to suit different amounts of people inside, This idea is used on websites to do things like choosing the proper elements for the display being used, and making images more easily viewed or text more readable. This way, the customer doesn't have to do excessive scrolling and shifting of your page to be able to consume mobile content, making the experience better for them.

Responsive web design has a lot of benefits. People who visit your site are possible customers, and you should make it easy for them by not asking them to click separate URLs in order to see it on their device. Having additional URLs means having additional websites also. When visitors to your site are split into separate groups depending if they are at home or mobile, your website will suffer because your site rankings will be split as well.

Instead of having to develop and manage content for multiple websites, businesses with responsive sites can take a unified approach to content management because they have only the one responsive site to manage. The same applies to analytics and strategy development and deployment. A responsive website means there is only one set of analytics to examine and a single strategy to develop and deploy.

Responsive design eliminates this issue altogether as all links will be pointing directly to one website for maximum SEO benefit. It is being demonstrated that Google seems to favour the responsive websites in searches. As we all are aware, traffic to your website is dependent on aligning with Google's specifications. Keeping Google happy is as important as keeping your customers happy.

One thing to really consider is that users want a full website experience, regardless of the device that they are using to browse. No one wants to be only shown what the site designer thinks you care about, customers want full control.

Content should always be seen by a potential or returning customer, and a responsive website will make sure this will happen. If a consumer finds a site while at home or work, they would like to be able to go back to the site at another location later from their mobile device, and find that the site looks and acts exactly the same, making the experience more enjoyable.
