Web Design that Sells
by Kris T. Larsson
If you are upgrading your website or starting out and creating a new site, be sure that the overall plan of your site is based on the best marketing and conversion strategies available today. Best design practices are now supported by empirical evidence. It's important to be aware of the basics. If you don't have the time to keep on top of the latest science of conversion marketing in the digital space, make sure the company you work with does.
Some people get hung up on the appearance of a site to the point where beauty becomes an end in itself. One should be slightly reluctant to work with a designer who has no business experience other than their own. It can be a lost opportunity to work with a team with little or no conversion marketing expertise. Your site should be aesthetically pleasing. As long as it is connected and supporting your business and your targets. Always consider your target audience, the user experience, and your ultimate business goals.
You site needs to be your best salesperson... in the form of sales, leads, or sign ups. Your website is now the face of your company and people will judge you based on their interaction with and impression of your site. The science backs up this claim. Whether or not people will purchase your product or service, is strongly influenced by their interaction with your company's website.
General Web Design Tips
Think about color contrast when you are contemplating your site. And don't forget to consider how those colors will look across different devices. There is almost never a good enough reason to have a dark background with light text in your main body. Smartphones and dark backgrounds are not a great marriage. There are some excellent sites that allow you to test your website in different browsers, different computer screen resolutions, on a variety of tablets and smartphones.
Overcrowding is a fatal flaw. People do tend to go overboard and try to put everything relevant to their business on their website. People don't surf the web this way. They scan. And they have very short attention spans. Break it down and strip away anything that is unnecessary. Try to limit your goals to just one or two per page. And don't just focus on your homepage. Every page needs a purpose and every page needs a call to action.
People won't wait for your site if it is slow. Three seconds is really the critical threshold. If you're any longer, people will leave your site. Run some diagnostics on your site to ensure your load time is acceptable. You can run these from a number of browser add ons or at specific sites that perform free testing.
The power and influence of video is undeniable. You need it. It's no longer optional. Surfers have grown accustomed to viewing video at websites. Conversions increase with video. Both time and engagement levels are improved when you put video at your site. And the costs of video for web are inexpensive. You don't need to hire a professional video production company for most of your online video needs. And if you do, don't worry, the costs have come down dramatically. It should also not look like your fifteen year old nephew took the video on your vintage sony camcorder.
Social proof, like testimonials, are vital. Especially if you are not a well recognized brand. Video is a great medium for testimonials. It is more believable and more personal. And don't just be self promoting when getting testimonials. Think about how you can benefit your client from within their own testimonial.
