Even though data shows that 60% of mobile usage happens when people are on the move (thereby increasing the need for mobile website design), an additional 40% of mobile usage (ie phones and connected devices, such as tablets, ereaders, ipods, etc.) occurs when users are home or at another stationary location. Interestingly enough, even when people are at home, most prefer using their mobile devices rather than a PC or laptop, dramatically increasing the need to create a mobile version of websites that you are hoping customers will utilize.

If you consider the daily use of mobile website design in your own home, it is easy to see exactly what we are talking about. Some real-life examples may help to make this concept a little clearer. In today's society, many, if not the majority, of people don't own an alarm clock, radio, or personal laptop. Instead, people use their mobile phones or other connected devices as full replacement for one or more of these devices. Not many homes are without a PC, but many still prefer to use their mobile applications when at home searching for something online instead. For many, especially for young adults, contact with the outside world revolves around a mobile phone or other web-enabled devices that can utilize mobile website design. Many teenagers will not even pick up a phone to have a conversation; however, they will use their phone for every other application imaginable. They will text and surf, even if they are not talking while out-and-about or even at home. At home you may also commonly use mobile devices, even though other options many be available to you. Consider, for instance, having your tablet open to research background information on players during a game, find a history of coaches, or even check out how the latest touchdown affects your Fantasy Football scores. The use of mobile devices, whether at home or not, dramatically increases the motivation to create a mobile version of website that can be used for all mobile applications.

And, especially when people are out, mobile website design is a brilliant marketing tool. When many people are out for an evening, mobile devices may help decide activities, pick eating establishments, and which stores will be shopped in. Being able to buy movie tickets with a smart phone, ordering out food in advance, or making reservations are all perks of the new mobile era that we have entered. Being able to plan dinner while at a child's soccer game or find directions to the next event makes using mobile devices more attractive then ever to many people.

Discounts or promotions offered via mobile services while shopping often provides incentives to potential customers. A customer may browse in a store because of a received mobile coupon to save 20% off total purchase. They may also buy to utilize the savings. And while this customer will probably receive additional texts for discounts or services at this same retailer, the savings received often makes the exchange a favorable one. And a return shopping trip on the next coupon offer received in more likely. Mobile devices also present an invaluable tool for checking competitor's prices and searching for money saving coupons via mobile services.

Mobile website design includes not only the need to create a mobile version of websites for the out-and-about user, but also for the stay-at-home mobile user as well.
