A caster can be fixed in two major ways on an object. The first way is to mount it on a pivot point so that the wheels revolve or rotate to align themselves to the direction of movement. The second way is to mount them on a fixed point so that their wheels do not rotate. They move in one direction alone. It is the responsibility of a user to ensure that the movement of objects is in line with the wheels.

Swivel and rigid are the two mainly known kinds of casters. Rigid types comprise of wheels mounted on stationary forks. The inclination of fork is usually fixed relative to the body of the vehicle and is determined during installation. Swivel types are the same as rigid models with the main exception being that the former feature additional joint over the fork. The joint permits the wheels to turn through 360 degrees when moving.

A basic caster features some braking mechanism. Braking is attained through hindering wheels from turning. Levers press brake cams against wheels to force them stop. This might however, not apply to all casters because in swivel versions, wheels might still turn a bit. More complex makes of swivel caster feature very rigid locking mechanisms, which disallow any kind of motion once locks are applied.

One key drawback of a caster is flutter. A perfect example of flutter is seen when the vehicle travels very fast that it sways side to side when a given speed is reached. This speed is reliant on the total weight supported by the vehicle and the distance between wheels. The flutter may be reduced significantly when the distance between rear and front wheels is increased.
