Facts About Copper Nickel Alloys

by Kate Perez

Copper Nickel (CuNi) alloys are famous for its excellent resistance to seawater corrosion and biofouling. To make it even more ductile and optimise the alloy's corrosion resistance in seawater, a few amount of iron and manganese are often added to CuNi alloys. Given these qualities, CuNi alloys are widely used in several marine applications such as offshore fire water system, heat exchangers and condensers, hydraulic lines, sheathing of legs and risers on offshore platforms desalination units, and many more.

Marine products are exposed to harsh conditions and thus it's crucial for marine engineers and ship builders to seriously consider the type and quality of materials to be used. After years of research and study, numerous CuNi alloys are set as the standard materials for marine building industry.

In the 1920s CuNi consists of 70% copper and 30% nickel. The 70/30 CuNi was used that time for making naval condensers. Not long after, engineers added 2% manganese and 2% iron. This combination proved to have better resistance to corrosion. Thirty years after, a 90-10 CuNi alloy became available primarily to be used in seawater piping systems. Both the 70/30 and the 90/10 CuNi are widely used in the industry.

There are certain standards that must be followed in order to optimise its full potential. For instance, the alloy must not be exposed to pollution. Restrictions to turbulence and velocity were also placed to promote safety and to ensure that the piping systems will perform properly.

Copper nickel can only be created by people with the right skills and knowledge in this field. If you're planning to hire a company to manufacture or install your piping system for you, then look for marine engineering companies that are regarded well in local and international community. Hiring these professionals for fabrication and pipe laying installations will not only help you save money, but it will also bring you security and peace of mind.
