Fountain Pens: A Written Account

by Cris Burnett

In a discussion about the history of fountain pens, the name Al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah deserves a mention. The fourth Fatimid Caliph and 14th Ismaili imam after all is acknowledged for his contribution to the invention of the pen. The man commissioned the invention of a writing instrument which is going to stain neither his hands nor his clothes.

Another person whose name is virtually synonymous to this kind of pen is the former insurance broker named Lewis Waterman. The man patented the first practical writing instrument of this kind. His capillary feed pen is really a welcome development because it was not simply practical but aesthetically pleasing too. As a result, it offers convenience to its users just as it serves as a piece of art which makes the person one proud owner of. Waterman also founded his Ideal Pen Company which later on came to be known as L.E. Waterman Company.

If there are people who commissioned and patented versions of the pen, there are of course, people who inspired their designs. One of those is the celebrated Renaissance man we know by the name of Leonardo Da Vinci. The Acme Leonardo Da Vinci Science pen features some of the works of this man. The designs which were actually screen printed on brass are but a few samples of Da Vinci's art which remains beyond compare even when centuries have already passed since they first wowed the world.

Even to the non-collectors, the Quink ink must nonetheless ring a bell. This indelible ink that the Parker Pen Company later on distributed was the invention of a chemist named Francisco Quisumbing. Quink is well, Quisumbing ink. The ink saw its perfect match in the Parker 51 which was the only pen in existence which can effectively adapt the new writing system that Quisumbing introduced.

There is a story behind every Visconti's Forbidden City H.R.H, Mont Blanc and Van Cleef & Arpel's Mystery Masterpiece, Caran d'Ache's La Modernista Diamonds and dunhill namiki among others. More to the point, there certainly are people behind the conception of these pieces of exquisite beauty. That's because every artist involved in the process utilised skills and devoted time to create a fountain pen that is not just functional. Rather, the artist made sure that each writing instrument of this kind comes out as a valuable piece of art in most ways that matter.
