Water color artists have been creating stunning landscapes and wildlife studies dating as far back as the 1400s. While the materials used in this type of painting have evolved over time, the basic supplies and techniques remain the same. In fact, many of today's painters still prefer landscapes and wildlife as their subject matter, since the natural luminescence of this type of paint brings life to their renderings.

Drastic improvements have been made in the availability and consistent quality of supplies, even though the basic materials are relatively the same. While the quality of paint is important, the use of water is equally important in this process. Water colors first became available on the commercial market in the 1700s. While these early versions used various binding agents based on what was available to hold pigments together, today's versions use a more scientific approach and are much more consistent in quality. Paints are sold in small pans, known as cakes, or in bendable metal tubes.

The paper available has also improved over the years. Most painters have a preference for a certain weight or finish, but this is largely based on achieving the desired result. Paper is available in individual sheets or a block, which is a pad of paper bound on all sides. Many artists prefer paper blocks as they are more portable.

Natural-haired brushes, which are softer and denser than synthetic brushes, are typically preferred due to their absorbent properties. However, some modern painters use synthetic brushes as they have improved drastically in recent years. Despite this fact, natural hair remains a more popular choice for most. Both synthetic and natural-haired brushes come in many sizes and shapes, which are used to achieve various effects.

Opaque paints require a much different technique than translucent paints. Learning to control the water on the page in combination with just the right quantity of paint is critical to achieving the desired results. Layering paint is the typical approach to achieving depth and richness of a painting, but this can quickly turn disastrous if the colors become muddy and overworked. This technique differs from opaque paints where colors can be layered indefinitely until the desired outcome is achieved.

Traditionally, this medium was largely used in detailed renderings of wildlife and landscapes. The luminescent quality of this type of paint seems to bring these subjects to life. Because of this fact, many of today's painters still focus on wildlife and landscapes. However, there are also many who paint only portraits or abstract subject matter.

Today's water color artists are fortunate to have access to high quality supplies. Although the quality and availability of supplies has changed greatly over the years, the basic techniques and materials used remain the same. It is also interesting that many artists have retained a preference for painting nature-based subjects. In addition to artists who paint animals and outdoor scenery, there are also many who focus on abstract paintings or portraits.
