So, some slick talking salesman is trying to sell you SEO services. He might sound very convincing and you might really want to believe everything that he's saying but you worry that you're going to lay out a whole bunch of money and be stuck in a contract without much to show for it. Times are tough and you sure could use a boost to your business. What should you believe?

The truth is that search engines and optimization for ranking your website within a search engine can be tricky business. The rules are constantly changing and more than one SEO company has caught flat footed as their client's websites suddenly disappear from the rankings after an algorithm change. It can even drive you crazy on a daily basis as you see your website's rankings fluctuate between wonderful and not so wonderful. Can this SEO company really deliver what they promise and is it worth it for you and your business?

You are the only one that can answer that question honestly. If you look at the statistics and see that a certain number of people search for your service or product in a month then you know how big your target audience is. You then can calculate that approximately 75 percent of those searching will click on a top spot. Out of that number you can roughly calculate that 25 percent will convert into customers or sales. If you know how much one customer is worth to you over a lifetime and then subtract the cost of advertising using SEO then you can get a good idea of whether search engine optimization is worth your while.

These are very basic and simple calculations. It's very important to remove the emotions from this decision and understand that it might be very cool to see your website on page one for a certain search term, don't let your vanity make this decision for you. Don't let someone pump up the hype and push you emotionally into something that isn't good for your business. Do the math and make the decision.

One way to look at SEO would be to consider it as a form of advertising. No different than any other form of advertising, there are variables that come into play. Are people looking for your service or product? How much do you stand to gain by bringing a customer to your website? What can you do to increase conversions? Could you offer special discounts or something for free to bring people in the door? SEO is just advertising using what people do naturally to get your name and your business in front of them.

Not that long ago, the phone book and newspapers where the only way to go when you wanted to do some advertising. You know how expensive that can be! These days people are turning to the internet to look for everything from lawyers to pizza. You're simply using the internet as your advertising medium and SEO is one way to get your name and your business in front of those customers who are looking for what you provide. SEO is a way of making your website appear to be more authoritative when it comes to your product or service in the eyes of the search engines. Well, your SEO guy will be doing that for you, of course.

If you've done the math and you can see the benefit of search engine optimization, start looking for someone you can work with. Find someone that you can trust who is willing to put their name and reputation on the line. Find someone that truly wants to help you and your business and who is interested in learning about your business and building a life long relationship with you. Trust your gut and go with the SEO services provider that is easy to work with and who appears to know his or her stuff.
