3 Lethal Marking Sins

by Benjamin W. Luffkin

There are many positive marketing attributes that companies should incorporate in their marketing strategies. However, just as much can be learned from understanding what not to do. There are several behaviors that companies should avoid because of the tremendously adverse effect that they can have on your credibility and your online reputation.

Vanity: British Novelist and Author, Jane Austen, had this to say about pride and vanity: "Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves; vanity, to what we would have others think of us." The lesson here is this: if marketers think too highly of themselves, they risk alienating themselves and becoming ignored altogether. Marketers should focus on how your product or service makes the customers' life easier, or better. Take the focus off of you and put it on your audience.

Authority: You know what they say, even a broken clock is right twice a day. Minda Zetlin used the Emperor's New Clothes as example on the topic of authority. "In the story of the Emperor's New Clothes, by Hans Christian Andersen, the emperor relies on the authority of his tailors who assure him he is clothed in cloth so fine only the wise can see it. Too embarrassed to admit that he sees nothing there, the emperor eventually finds himself nude in front of all his subjects."

There will always be experts that say "take this wonder food; it's good for you!" And then, you will have another expert telling you exactly why that same wonder food is completely bad for you. Instead of relying on facts to support everything your business is about try to establish a real connection with your audience. People respond to real feelings, emotion, and values.

Insincerity: Always to be authentic. Remember the Aesop's fable about the wolf in sheep's clothing? The wolf disguised himself so well that the shepherd mistook him for a sheep and slaughtered the wolf; and had the wolf for dinner? Be the company that you say that you are. Don't try to do too much or change to fit into an image that is not representative of who you are as a company. The risk in being insincere is that eventually someone will find out the truth and when they do, it won't be pretty. Be who you are and customers will gravitate towards you.
