Selecting the Right Guitar Strap
by Derek Tones
Few things are more exciting than picking up a brand spanking new guitar, and this results in picking up a new guitar strap as well. When purchasing a guitar strap, the wide variety could be intimidating since there are a ton of brands and styles available. Most professional guitarists know what they prefer, however, if you're a beginner, you may just have to check and see what material you prefer. This article should help you choose a guitar strap that is perfect for you.
Most straps will either come in leather, polyester or nylon. Leather is well known for its support and durability and often will take some time to get use to and break in. Polyester is a soft material that is not only inexpensive, but is also comfortable the moment you get the strap. Nylon is rather similar to polyester, but gives a slicker feel that allows the strap to move more freely. For any new player, Polyester will most likely be a great choice until you get use feeling to the weight of the guitar on your shoulders. Like I pointed out before, they are often inexpensive to purchase and give the most comfort straight out of the box.
Polyester and Nylon straps are a woven material that traditionally are available in a 2 inch width therefore the choice comes down to either cost or design. Selecting a leather guitar strap can be a little more confusing as they range from 2 to 4 inches in width. 4 inch widths are fairly typical for the heavier bass guitars available. After you've played for a few months you should get a sense of whether you are leaning towards wanting a wider strap or not, and if you think you're looking for more stability by using a leather guitar strap.
The bottom line is really personal taste on deciding on materials and widths. Some players are dedicated to certain brand names and swear by certain materials and widths, nevertheless it's really up to you. Straps range between 5 dollars up to 600 depending on the options you are searching for. There are even sites that let you design your own personal guitar strap on-line, allowing you to select patterns and pictures that suit your look.
Keep in mind that guitar straps are usually adjustable from 40-60 inches for a woven strap and 45-55 inches for leather. 45 to 55 inches is commonly suitable for anyone from 5' 2" to 6' 1". Should you be much taller than 6' 1", try to find the manufacturers offering extra long variations of straps on their websites.
Now you know about the different strap options, but where is a good place to pick one up? Guitar straps are available at most any music retailers like Guitar Center or Sam Ash, but can also be bought from online retailers like Amazon or Ebay. If you want a particular brand, most manufacturers also sell directly from their website.
