Beat Back Your Writer's Block

by Milagros Dotson

If you're a writer, it's inevitable that there will be times that you have writer's block and just can't figure out how to move forward. The strategies we'll be covering in this article will help you get over writer's block so you can get back to being productive.

Stop Forcing Yourself: Allow yourself to move with the flow and become comfortable with the actual writing process because trying to force yourself could work in a total opposite way. Go easy on yourself, and try to do your best but at the same time avoid creating external pressure on yourself as that can block your creativity. The one thing that every writer needs to focus on is enjoying the process of writing. If you aren't having any fun with what you are writing, then you will probably find you have to force yourself to do it which could make things worse instead of better. Trying to force yourself to write is like trying to force yourself to sleep when you have insomnia. Sometimes the first sentence or the first draft of your article may seem to be the hardest, which is why you should just let go and get your creative juices flowing in.

Try Changing Your Setting: Sometimes if you've spend too much time in one setting and do all your writing there, this can contribute to writer's block because you're just bored. This is why you need to try and trick your mind by swapping your surroundings, and making them less formal. If you're working on a laptop, you can take it on the roof, to the coffee shop or even to a park near you. You'll find it a lot easier to focus on your writing and get your creativity kick in when you simply change the surroundings. When your surroundings never change, it can be hard to come up with new ideas for your work. The most important thing that you need is focus, and you can get this focused feeling by working in a different environment.

Take a Rest: There is a big difference trying to work when you are tired as opposed to being alert and active when writing. Writers block can happen more frequently when you are feeling tired and exhausted, so try to take small naps when you feel that way. But before that, you should make sure that you're getting a good amount of sleep each and every night, so that you're able to stay mentally focused throughout the day. Keep in mind though that taking regular naps helps recharge your body and gives you that needed energy boost.

You have lots of ways to get over your writer's block and some are a lot better than others. Whichever method you choose, if you want to be good at writing you need to learn how to cure your writer's block as soon as it sets in.
