Deciding whether to build your own Small Business Website

by Martin Rochester

Having a small business website built for you needn't break the bank and should pay for itself through the new sales it generates. You might be thinking about building your own website but unsure where to start. Ask yourself these questions. Primarily, do you have the time required to dedicate to putting a website together? and secondly what would you like your new website to do for you?

It is not impossible to build your own basic site for your business. I by no means intend to suggest that web design isn't an exceptionally in depth subject or that it doesn't require a lot of study and skill but at a basic level and with a bit of applied learning you can achieve some pretty good results.

To be good at creating your own website you should be the kind of person who can pick things up fairly speedily and also be good at understanding new systems, these are often skills found in people that own and run their own business. Before you can begin, you will need to gain some knowledge of CSS, HTML and basic web design and layout. This list however is not exhaustive.

Lets go back to our initial question. Do you have the time to learn these skills?

You might feel that you would be happy to put the hours in to learn the fundamentals because you are feeling fed up with working for other people and want to start up on your own. Spend a bit of time online and check out some tutorial sites. Find and purchase the latest 'Build Your Own Website' book through Amazon. You will find plenty of learning avenues to guide you.

You could however be looking into this option from a altogether different position. Maybe you are already aware there are not sufficient hours in your day. Building your own business website in this situation is not likely to do you, your business or your family life any favours and if you aren't able to concentrate on what you are trying to achieve then the results aren't going to do your business justice.

Second question to ask yourself. What do you hope your new website will gain you? You should also have a think about where your niche within the market sits. Have a browse over some of your direct competitors websites.

If you run a small business as a gardener or electrician for instance, a basic website with your contact details enabling individuals to find you and give you a call may totally meet your needs. Building this kind of basic website would be altogether manageable.

The type of business you are in however may need something more professional. If this is the case then a basic looking site might not give an impression of your business that you want potential clients to see. Do some research online. What sort of quality site do your direct competitors have? If you find that the measure is above what you can realistically achieve then seeking a professional web designer may be the better choice for your business.

To conclude the above; If you have the time you will need to develop the new skills you need and go on to build a site of a high enough standard for your business, then go for it! but if not, then youshould hire a professional. One last thing you will need to take into consideration is that once you complete your site, it will not benefit your business if people cannot locate it on Google. For your website to be successful, you need it to reach high in the search engine rankings.

If you are a small business owner and you don't have some sort of web presence to promote it then you are missing out on crucial potential customers and sales. Whilst it may not be beyond the realms of possibility to create your own business website, you need to carefully weigh up whether or not you have the the spare time to learn the new skills necessary and whether you are likely to produce a site of enough quality to meet your needs.
