Getting Inspired to Write Your Own Music

by Tarron Bentley

It's always best to have a core concept to build up your song from but where do we find this central idea that everything will just flow forth from? There actually is no set method when you are learning the way to write songs but below are 1 or 2 tricks and tips that have been of assistance to me.

Record Everything

If you have recording capability, and let's accept it it's becoming increasingly simple to record a simple idea. (You may also download an entire 4 track recording application for your iPhone.) you can start recording even the most simple ideas that come to you as inspiration for future song ideas. Don't spend a substantial amount of time trying hard to get a great recording just capture the concept and push on. You may not actually have your instrument with you when inspiration strikes and that is fine. There isn't any problem humming an idea for a riff or melody line. Just capture the concept and build a library of seed ideas for your music.

Write over a Drum Loop

I myself love this method and this is how I started when first learning the best way to write music. I might load a basic drum loop into my audio software and just play over it until something came out. That may be a guitar riff, a piano line a tune concept it does not really count just find something you can hang your hat on.

Set Boundaries

One of the largest problems songwriters have a tendency to have when learning how to write is that there are no limits and it becomes extraordinarily difficult to settle on an idea. One way around this is to actually set yourself boundaries, the idea itself is nothing new. William Shakespeare would regularly write in 'iambic pentameter ' which was essentially building some boundaries for his writing. Iambic Pentameter fundamentally refers to writing 10 syllables in each line broken into 5 pairs. The definition itself isn't important the lesson here is that Shakespeare had to limit his options before he could write prolifically.

Don't Isolate Yourself

There really is no substitute to just relaxing with similar-minded musicians and jamming. When you are just bouncing notes of other musicians you tend to come up with ideas that you cannot find alone. Alternatively your fellow bandmates will lead you in directions that wouldn't have come easily to you only thanks to the different musical influences at play and this is often actually useful when learning to write.

My hope is that this article gives you some creative concepts on how to write songs.
