Tips On Making The Most Of Your Uke Tuner

by Matt Hawkins

When playing your ukelele, the aim is to get as close as you possibly can to a perfect pitch. This is what the purpose of a uke tuner is. Searching for the one that is right for you will ensure it is used in the correct manner, thus creating a far more harmonious sounding ukelele.

You will want to make sure you pick the best tuning style to begin with by finding the one you feel most at ease with. There are various different methods of tuning, but depending on the type of person you are and what capabilities you have, you should find a product you feel comfortable with. Whether you feel it's simpler to use an electronic tuner or by ear, picking your style is what you need to start.

Electronic tuners are helpful as they can easily recognize the pitch of your ukelele strings. Clipping onto the ukelele or simply being free to hold loosely, they record the sound you are playing and can sometimes have a built in metronome so you are able to give yourself a rhythmic pace to play to. Online versions are also available for free, but are less effective since they are not able to record the tones that are playing.

If you have a good sense of pitch, then you could tune your instrument by using your ears. However, most people do not have a great sense of pitch, and would be well served to look into getting a pitch pipe or tuning fork to help with the process. If an electronic uke tuner is not for you, tuning your ukelele manually may be your solution.

For the non-professional player digital tuning would probably be best. A frame of reference to help you in listening for the right notes would be helpful if you are new to tuning. Once you feel more confident then it would be easier to start doing it by ear.

An important factor to remember is that practice is essential to tuning your ukelele properly. It is also best to ensure that your instrument has been re-strung if it needs to be so you can begin without any interruptions. When tuning, the idea is to play each note in succession while comparing the sound to the correct pitch. Turn the pegs on the head of the ukelele while you are tuning until the sound no longer sound warbly. You can tighten the string to raise the pitch and also make the string looser to lower the pitch.

If there is any slack left on the string after tuning, you might have to start all over again as the instrument will quick start to lose its pitch. To keep this from happening, you need to make sure the string is properly tightened before finishing. You want to make sure that what is being played has the proper pitch so you need to make sure each string is tuned completely before moving on to the next one.

Learning to tune well takes time and patience, but with practice and focus, you can become comfortable with tuning to the point where you will be doing it in less and less time. When you know what particular uke tuner you intend to use and how it can grant you the best sound quality, you should be well on your way to having your ukelele sound the way it was meant to sound. Continuing to research and practice should both inform you of what is happening in the tuning market and develop your tuning and uke playing abilities further.
