An Excited Review Of "The Walking Dead" By Zombie T-Shirts Guy

by Tim Thatcher

With much anticipation, I have finally seen the culmination of awesome writing and fan outcry in the form of "The Walking Dead." I am such a huge fan of the genre that I have been collecting and wearing zombie t-shirts for years. All of my friends would look at me funny every time I started going crazy over "The Walking Dead" comic that is written by Robert Kirkman. They, of course, had no idea what I was talking about and they had no clue that comics could be for adults too. Now that "the Walking dead" is an acclaimed television show, everyone can join in on my fanatical dedication to this awesome story.

In 2003, Image comics took a risk and allowed Robert Kirkman to come on board and create a black-and-white comic book about zombie survival. Much to the failing publisher's delight, the comic was a huge success. It helped reestablish Image as one of the leading comic book creators and heralded a new age for them. The comic follows a group of survivors led by a police officer named Rick Grimes. He is a tragic hero, and the series has all of the heartache and loss of an Italian opera. I am a massive fan, and I have the zombie t-shirts to prove it.

Another thing that adds to the incredible depth of the characters is the superb acting by the cast. The characters can be as richly written and directed as you like, but it takes skill and charisma as an actor to flesh those words out into a three-dimensional being. Andrew Lincoln brings the character of Rick Grimes into stark reality. His emotions are fully bare as he stoically leads a group of survivors across a wasted landscape, taking the responsibility of many people's lives all upon his own weary shoulders. Jon Bernthal also gives a noted performance as Rick's sketchy best friend, Shane. I would buy zombie t-shirts featuring any of this guys in a heartbeat.

Robert Kirkman wrote an astounding storyline that has arced almost a hundred issues and has gone extremely deep into the survival efforts of Rick and his family. Of remarkable note is that the television show has deviated quite sharply from the story in the comic. Some people hate this, but not I. I love that I'm getting surprised again. That was part of the charm of the comic is that such terrible, shocking things were constantly happening. I get to go on a similar journey that I began a few years ago, but with new twists and turns! I have lots of comic-inspired zombie t-shirts, and now I'm going to have to buy show-inspired ones as well!

The second season has just begun on the AMC channel, and I can't say enough good things about it. The survivors are on the move and the writers have thrown down the gauntlet by making the entire first episode of season two tense and anxiety-inspiring. The very first monologue of the show features Rick talking to no one on a walkie-talkie, venting his inner fears and pain. The scene is so powerful, that I literally got goose bumps. Watch the show, and you'll be buying zombie t-shirts like me in no time.
