Why Website Optimisation Is Important

by Cindy Craig

Internet marketing is a modern promotional strategy that follows its own set of procedures and practices. One essential procedure is SEO or search engine optimisation, which aims to improve the visibility of the business by driving traffic to websites. Online users primarily depend on search engines when they gather information or buy products and services. Popular search engines like Google and Yahoo earn huge amount of money every year because they serve as virtual surf boards of the web. For this reason, website owners need to strategize on getting slots in the first page of search engines' result list.

It's important to take note that search engines are programmed to recognize and classify texts. Search engines do not fully comprehend the meanings of these texts, but they can identify keyboard characters, the arrangements of characters that form words, and the potential connections of words to other words. This explains why users do not get relevant search results when they incorrectly spelled a keyword or phrase. Search engines utilize software called spiders that crawl throughout web pages and classify the texts that these pages contain.

Given the fact that search engines work by relying on texts, it is easy to conclude that search engine optimisation concerns figuring out how Internet users use keywords and phrases in performing searches. It also follows that engine crawlers are incapable of recognizing non-textual elements of web pages, a condition that have a major impact on how web pages are ranked by search engines.

These non-textual elements include images, videos, and programming scripts. Web pages that heavily use these non-textual elements are expected to get poor ranking since the spiders do not have the material to identify and classify them.

Skilled web developers are trained on how to structure websites in such a way that the sites receive spiders on certain pages and then reject on others- particularly those loaded with non-visual elements. This method of selective crawling, one of the many approaches in engine optimisation, increases the chance of websites to get high rankings.

Search engine spiders do several procedures to deliver Internet marketing results, aside from crawling. Other activities that spiders perform are the following: indexing, calculating relevancy, and retrieving. Indexing pertains to classifying web pages depending on words or key phrases that is most relevant to the website's content. It might seem impossible to process such a huge amount of data and information, but not with search engines. Even a spider does not recognize the meaning of a page right away, it helps if the website is optimised.
