How Are Back-links Important and vital for Your Internet site?

There is no doubt in my mind that those amoungst you who are aware of how Google works and attaining the top positions will be in agreement with me when I say that backlinks are so very important in getting that all important 1st page position. Plus it's even better if you can get them for free.
For those of you new to websites and SEO then a backlink is ultimately another link from a different website that points to your website,you might hear them referred to as incoming links. Basically if you post an article and there is a link in it to your site, that is a backlink! Or if another website owner puts a link on there website to you then that's a backlink.
Most people would not have too many problems getting incoming linking but you would be wise to note that you should get links from other relevant content. So if your site is about gardening then you would be best to get links from other websites and articles about gardening, the reason for this is that the search engines love relevancy. So every inbound link that comes from a similar site will be regarded as higher quality than if you had linked from a site about a different suject. Relevant backlinks are far better for your website.
If you work hard at it you can dominate the search engines for most key words, obviously there are some keywords that are just simply too competitive but there are thousands that you can rank for. It seems to be a case of who can get the most backlinks, so if you want to outrank your friend, create more incoming links then they have and providing your content is relevant to your desired key phrase it's most likely you will get a better ranking.
Overall it's not too complicated is it? It's vital that you are regular, Google in particular jumps for joy when they see lots of links appearing like clockwork, Google will love your site and consequently will place you higher. If you make a few links and then cease Google looses interest and that must not happen!
It's a real drag having to contact other webmasters to aquire links and it can also be tiresome submitting articles manually, Hours I have spent doing this before, it's not pleasant! So really what we need is an automated solution where we can do the work once and then just forget about it and know that our links will be built for us. Or even better would be to have our backlinks built for us on Auto-Pilot so we don't have to do anything!
