Residents and entrepreneurs in regions where the power supply is expensive and erratic may often wonder how to sell electricity. There is no simple answer because it is based on the feasibility of producing excess renewable energy at the location in question. What happens is that the law compels the utility to buy power at the same rate the customer is paying them. If not for these laws, the utility would pay only the wholesale power purchase rate. As a practical matter, it needs a net meter. This meter can add units when power is being taken from the grid or remove units from the total when power is fed into the grid. In this way, the consumer only gets a net bill where the power fed into the grid has been subtracted from the overall amount consumed.

If the customer has fed in more power into the grid than was taken, then the utility company owes the customer. In this case, some companies will pay cash while others will carry forward the difference on to the next billing cycle. State laws do not govern this issue, so it is usually decided by the utility company's power purchase policies.

The most popular residential renewable or clean energy systems are solar panels and wind turbines. The choice depends on the location. For instance, homes and farms in rural areas with expansive space will find the wind turbine to be more appropriate. Urban buildings will consider solar panel arrays on the roof to be the better choice.

Off-grid systems save power in batteries. The battery output will be DC and has to be converted into AC with an inverter before it can be used or sold. On-grid systems that send the generated power into the grid are actually selling two different products. One is the electricity and the other is the REC (renewable energy credit).

One REC equals 1000KW-hours as per the EPA. Renewable energy producers can sell both the electricity and REC to their utility. They can also choose to sell the REC as a separate product to other buyers looking to balance their production and consumption of energy from non-renewable sources.

A huge amount of money is being poured into R&D and testing of innovative business models. Plugged-in electric vehicles are being considered as a distributed set of storage units that can be tapped for power. Several countries have adopted a Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program where consumers are paid to use their own renewable energy.

These kinds of schemes are beneficial in multiple ways. Producers get paid for using the power and selling it. They will additionally save money that would otherwise have to be paid to the utility company. If enough renewable energy can be produced for personal use and sale, then the rest of it will simply fall into place.
